Situated
in the Minervois, the commune of La Redorte is part of the
area Peyriac-Minervois, and covers 1349 hectares, it's streams
and underground channels: north of the river Argent Double,
and south of the Rivassel, east of the "Canal du Midi"
and also the Aude. Offer a great potential it's because of
this that our area offers an ideal site for wine production
and tourism.
The original name of La Redorte in the old language of "Occitan" was Redorta, which meant site of cane (as in basket weaving) fencing, and of hedges. On the coat of arms of the old families of NIGRI there appears three gold chains, this symbol still remains as our symbol.
The first mention of any textile activity was in 1080 the first mention of La Redorte. Bernard Tetmar and his brother based a La Redorte (Redorta) were the first nobles to reside in Redorta from the 11th century until the 13 th century.
In 1216 there appeared the house of "NIGRI de Redorta", in effect Simon de Montfort gave a part of La Redorte to Amaury de Montfort in recompense for services renderered, this part of La Redorte was called NIGRO. At the same time the older families of La Redorte the NIGRI continued to produce hay and more importantly wine for the king who owned the rights to the village, this being transported on the Canal du Midi.
In 1275 La Redorte became an area where a toll was installed, still showing on maps today. And by the 13 th century over halve the village was owned by the Nigri families notably Clarmont Auxillons, and the families of Montbrun and Levis.
In 1561 the Parliament of Toulouse gave Pierre Lenoir the rights of halve of the old village in return for taxes to be paid in 1564 to the king. In 1565, Estienne Faure, was chosen as captain of the guard to assist with the visit of Charles IX to Narbonne. In the 17 th century an order was made to give Dame Esperonnat the responsibility of the village (Countess).
An area west of the village had the name "Hopital" which probably part of the "Order of Malta" who were largely represented in the Minervois. The Nigri family was still present by the end of 17 th century which heralded the construction of the canal du midi situated east of the village. By 1722 the Lord of la Redorte a certain Pierre Paul of Peyrat, was in place with also the Nigri families at La Redorte, it was noted at this time in 1792 a demand was made to install a military detachment in front of the chateau to allow the free flow of works on or about the canal du midi. Also at this time an application was made to demolish the four towers of the chateau which were considered too feudal in style.
The
12 th century, was notable for terrible hail storms and floods
which destroyed many of the harvest.
The nineteenth century, a general Maurice Mathieu acquired part of La Redorte from Peyrat the previous lord. In 1817 a royal order gave his descendants military for the greater part the rights of inheritance.
In 1887 La Redorte was hit by a cyclone which killed six
people and wounded many others.

The old village situated behind the chateau and the church
still exists today, with roads leading from this area dating
from mediaeval times, with names like the road of the city,
or the road of the Pic Nore, and the road of the Languedoc.
Today more modern names appear along side such as Barry d'Amont
or Barry d'Aval.
It should be noted that the castrum or chateau of La Redorte
was first mentioned in 1128, probably first situated behind
the existing site of the chateau.
In the avenue de la Republique a cross marks the existence
of an alms house placed under the protection of Saint Roch
founded in 1854. This association was founded to help the
sick and suffering. The tradition still exists today: every
16 th august small loaves which are blessed are given to the
faithful.

The success of the wine production in the nineteenth century
gave La Redorte the means to construct houses, the Mairie
/ school (1881), the church and the village flourished, a
walk around the village will still show visitors the remnants
of the old village such as the "old pump" which
was one of the last fountains to be installed, also the old
weighing scales outside the "cave cooperative" which
were still being used, up to 1970.
